Chapter Five
The Warmest Welcome Home
The giant oak tree stood tall and quiet behind them as Leo and Pip began their walk home. The sky was turning a soft, sleepy purple. Pink clouds drifted like fluffy cotton candy across the treetops. Leo held Pip’s paw gently in his hand. Pip’s small puppy paws went pit-pat, pit-pat on the soft dirt path.
"We did it, Pip," Leo whispered. He looked down at his little dog. "We found each other. And we made some very nice chipmunk friends, too."
Pip let out a happy little bark. Yip! He wagged his tail so fast that his whole back end wiggled. He stopped for a second to sniff a bright yellow flower, then hopped right back to Leo’s side. Pit-pat, pit-pat went his paws.
As they walked out of the deep woods and into the wide meadow, the world began to change. The sun dipped below the green hills, and the very first night-lights of nature began to turn on.
Blink.
Leo stopped. "Look, Pip!"
Blink. Blink.
A tiny, golden light floated near Leo’s nose. Then another one drifted over Pip’s floppy ears.
"Fireflies!" Leo giggled.
The meadow was suddenly full of them. Dozens of tiny, glowing bugs danced in the cool evening air. They looked like little yellow stars that had fallen from the sky just to light the way home. Pip jumped up, trying to catch a glowing light with his paws. But the firefly floated gently upward, safe and warm. Pip landed on his soft bottom and sneezed. Achoo!
Leo laughed and patted Pip’s soft head. "Don't worry, buddy. They are just showing us the path. Let’s follow them."
Together, the boy and his puppy walked through the dancing lights. The tall green grass tickled Leo’s ankles. The cool evening breeze blew through his hair, carrying the sweet smell of pine trees and damp earth. With every step, the deep forest grew further away, and the familiar sights of home grew closer.
Soon, Leo saw the tall wooden fence of their very own backyard. He saw the red slide on his swing set. He saw his black-and-white soccer ball sitting right where he had left it, resting in the middle of the green grass.
A warm, golden light shone from the kitchen window. The back door creaked open, and a very sweet, very familiar voice called out into the yard.
"Leo? Pip? Snack time, my brave explorers!"
It was Mom.
"We are here, Mom!" Leo called back, his voice bright with excitement.
Pip ran ahead, his long ears flapping like little wings. He squeezed right under the wooden gate and waited on the other side, his tail wagging like a windshield wiper. Leo opened the gate and ran inside, feeling the wonderful, cozy feeling of being back where he belonged.
They ran up the back porch steps together. Mom was standing there with a big smile. She knelt down and gave Pip a nice scratch behind his ears, which made Pip’s back leg thump-thump-thump with joy. Then she wrapped her arms around Leo in a big, warm hug. She smelled like laundry soap and sweet vanilla.
"You two look like you had quite an adventure," Mom said, wiping a little bit of forest dirt from Leo’s cheek. "Are you hungry?"
"Starving!" Leo said. "We walked all the way to the big oak tree. Pip was very brave, and I was very brave, and we even shared my star biscuits."
"I am so proud of you both," Mom smiled. She handed Leo a large blue plate. "Here is your reward."
On the plate were thick, crisp slices of bright red apples. Next to the apples was a big, delicious scoop of creamy peanut butter.
Leo sat down on the top step of the porch. The wood was still warm from the afternoon sun. Pip sat right next to him, leaning his warm puppy shoulder against Leo’s leg.
Leo took a red apple slice and dipped it deep into the peanut butter. He took a big bite. Crunch! The apple was sweet and juicy, and the peanut butter was thick and salty. It was the best snack in the whole wide world.
"Here you go, Pip," Leo said. He took a tiny piece of apple, put a very small dot of peanut butter on it, and held it out on his flat hand.
Pip licked it up in one quick, happy gulp. Slurp! Pip’s tongue was warm and sandpaper-rough. He looked up at Leo with his big, brown eyes, hoping for more.
"Just one more," Leo laughed, giving him another small bite.
They sat together on the porch as the sky turned from purple to deep, dark blue. The stars began to peek out, twinkling softly. The air was cool now, but Leo felt perfectly warm. He felt safe. He felt like the luckiest boy in the universe because he had his best friend right beside him.
Once the plate was completely clean, Leo stood up and stretched his arms high above his head. He let out a big yawn. Yaaawn.
"Come on, Pip," Leo whispered.
They walked down the porch steps and onto the soft, cool grass. Leo trotted over to his soccer ball and tapped it with his toe. The ball rolled a little way, and Pip chased after it, bopping it with his wet nose.
Leo sat down on the grass next to the ball, and Pip came over to join him. Pip circled around twice, finding the perfect spot, and then plopped down right in Leo’s lap. He curled up into a tight, warm little ball of fur.
Leo wrapped his arms around his puppy. He rested his chin on Pip’s soft head. Pip sighed a happy puppy sigh and closed his eyes.
"Tomorrow," Leo whispered into Pip’s soft ears, "we are going to play the biggest soccer game ever. I will kick the ball super high, and you can run and catch it. We will score a million goals."
Pip gave a tiny, sleepy twitch of his tail, as if he was already dreaming of chasing the soccer ball across the grass.
Leo looked up at the stars twinkling above their yard. The backyard felt big and full of magic, but it also felt like the safest place on earth. He knew that no matter how far they wandered, and no matter what adventures they found, they would always have this warm grass, these sweet snacks, and each other.
Leo closed his eyes with a happy sigh, knowing that no matter where they wander, they will always find their way back together.
