Aya and the First Day Brave

Chapter 4: The Great Art Room Expedition

Chapter Four

The Great Art Room Expedition

The Great Art Room Expedition

The school hallway was very quiet during recess. Usually, the long corridor was filled with the stomping of boots, the happy chatter of children, and the loud clack-clack of locker doors. But right now, everyone was outside playing tag on the sunny playground.

Aya and Leo walked side by side. Their sneakers made soft squeak-squeak sounds on the shiny blue floor.

"I know I had it this morning," Leo said, looking down at his empty hands. "It is my absolute favorite marker. It is called Forest Green. You cannot build a proper rocket ship control panel without Forest Green."

"We will find it," Aya said softly. She gave Leo a small, encouraging smile. Inside, her heart was doing a happy little dance. She was actually walking down the hall with a friend! A real, live friend who loved to draw rocket ships just as much as she did.

Suddenly, a bright blue light flickered near Aya’s shoulder.

Whir-clink-bip!

It was Buzz. Her imaginary robot friend was floating right next to her ear. He wore a tiny, shiny silver helmet, and the screen on his chest blinked with friendly green dashes.

"Do not fear, Captain Aya!" Buzz chirped, his voice sounding like a cheerful, humming toaster. "My sensors are fully booted up. I am now in Radar Tracker Mode. Initiating scan for the missing Forest Green marker!"

Buzz held his metal hands out and spun around in a circle. Beep... beep... beep...

Aya covered her mouth to hide her giggle. Leo could not see Buzz, of course, but Aya could see him perfectly.

"What is funny?" Leo asked, turning his head with a curious look.

"Oh, nothing," Aya said quickly, her cheeks warming up. "I was just thinking. Where did you use the marker last?"

"In the art room," Leo said, pointing down the hall. "We were drawing star maps right before recess."

Buzz floated ahead of them, his imaginary wheels spinning in the air. "My radar is picking up strong crayon signals!" Buzz announced. "Beep-boop! I suggest we check the art supply bin near the window. That is a prime location for lost coloring tools."

Aya nodded. She looked at Leo. "Maybe we should check the big art supply bin? The one right by the window where the sun shines?"

Leo’s eyes lit up. "That is a great idea! The sun was very bright this morning. I bet I left it right there."

They reached the door of the art room. It was wide open. Inside, the room smelled like sweet paper glue, fresh drawing paper, and dusty chalk. Bright paintings of yellow sunflowers and bluebirds hung on the walls, drying in the warm sunlight.

Aya and Leo tiptoed inside.

"Look!" Leo whispered, pointing to the window.

A big plastic bin sat on a low wooden table. It was filled to the brim with colorful rulers, safety scissors, and glue sticks. Aya and Leo hurried over. Together, they began to search.

"Not here," Leo sighed, pulling out a bright yellow marker.

"Not here either," Aya said, holding up a purple crayon.

Buzz landed lightly on the edge of the table. He put his hands on his hips and looked around. His shiny robot eyes zoomed in and out like camera lenses. Whir, click!

"Aha!" Buzz squeaked. "Captain, look up! High altitude target detected!"

Aya followed Buzz’s pointing metal finger. She looked up, past the low table, past the middle shelves, all the way to the very top shelf of the tall wooden bookcase.

Sitting right on the edge of the top shelf was a long, plastic tray. And sticking out of the tray was a single, bright green cap.

"Leo, look," Aya whispered. She pointed to the high shelf.

Leo gasped. "My Forest Green marker! It must have been put away in the wrong bin when we cleaned up."

He reached up as high as he could. He stretched his fingers. He stood on the very tips of his toes. But his fingers were still a whole ruler-length away from the bottom of the shelf.

Aya tried too. She stood on her tiptoes and stretched her arm up. Her fingers brushed the smooth wood of the shelf, but she could not reach the plastic tray. It was just too high.

"Oh no," Leo said, his shoulders dropping. "It is too far up. We will never get it down before recess ends."

"Don't give up yet," Aya said gently. She liked solving puzzles. Back home, she used to help her grandmother find her lost sewing needles all the time. She just needed to think like an explorer.

Aya reached into her deep pocket. Her fingers wrapped around her favorite tool—her small, silver magnifying glass. She carried it everywhere. It made her feel like a real scientist.

"What is that?" Leo asked, leaning in to look.

"It is my magnifying glass," Aya said proudly. "It helps me see things that are very small."

She held the magnifying glass up to the edge of the high wooden shelf. Right beneath the plastic tray, there was a tiny, faded white label. The letters were too small and blurry to read from the floor, but through the thick glass of her magnifier, the letters grew big and clear.

"S-T-E-P," Aya read out loud, tracing the letters in the air. "Step... stool. It says: Step-stool located behind the teacher's desk."

"A step-stool!" Leo clapped his hands. "That is perfect! We can use it to reach the shelf."

Aya smiled. Her clever trick had worked! Together, they were a great team.

They walked over to the big wooden desk at the front of the room. Aya peeked behind it. Sure enough, there was a small plastic step-stool with two sturdy steps. But when Aya gave it a little pull, she realized it was tucked tightly behind a heavy storage box.

"It is stuck," Aya said, tugging on the handle of the stool.

Leo knelt down beside her. "Let me help. On the count of three, we pull together. One, two, three!"

They both pulled. With a soft scrape, the plastic step-stool slid out from behind the box.

"We did it!" Leo laughed.

But just as they lifted the stool, Aya heard footsteps in the hallway. Click, clack, click, clack. Someone was walking toward the art room.

Aya looked through the open doorway. Walking down the hall was Mrs. Gable, the friendly school librarian. She was carrying a tall, heavy stack of picture books.

Aya’s heart gave a sudden, nervous squeeze. She wanted to get the marker, but she knew she wasn't supposed to climb on stools without an adult helping. She wanted to ask Mrs. Gable for help, but her throat felt very dry. Speaking to teachers always made her feel shy and quiet.

"Captain," Buzz whispered, hovering near her cheek. "You are a brave explorer. You can do this. Just use your friendly voice!"

Mrs. Gable was getting closer and closer to the door. Aya took a deep breath. She had to find the words.
